iPad Screen video capture

iOS 11 brings us a new Record button to Control Center. The new function enables you to record screen to a video file which can then be edited in video editing programs. The new beta of iOS 11 was installed on iPad Pro to test this function. This post covers the screen capture of a Cubasis project. Cubasis is a digital audio workstation program for iPad made by Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH. The video will be processed in Pinnacle Studio Pro and posted on YouTube and Instagram. Obviously you can apply these instructions to other programs on iPad.

As an example I made a project in Cubasis in 44.1 kHz/16 bit configuration. Pulled up some drums and recorded two bass tracks on top.

Instructions how to make the video:

Record the video by pressing the new Record button in Control Center. The Record button will start blinking with red Color. Now play Cubasis project through.

After stopping Cubasis stop screen recording by pressing the Record button again. The recorded video will be saved in Photos folder.

To get stereo audio for the video we will have to make a mixdown from Cubasis.

To make a Mixdown: Media -> Mixdown -> Create Mixdown -> Choose WAV

Choose the new file -> Share -> Share to Pinnacle Pro

In Pinnacle align the WAV file in correct place according to the video and choose to Share Movie to Photos.

Choose next values for sharing:

Now the video can be published on YouTube and Instagram. Since the iPad Instagram app is not able to publish stereo sound on videos it must be sent to a phone and published from there.

This is the finished video In YouTube:

Audio Coding for Instagram Videos

Problem I tumbled into when posting my first Instagram videos: NO SOUND! WHAT THE HECK? After Googling around I found out that Instagram requires AAC coding for audio. This is how I managed to get best results for me:

  • Export audio from DAW (in my case Cubase) in WAV file with 44.1kHz/16 bit resolution

  • Import the WAV file to video editing software (in my case Pinnacle Studio 19) and add it as audio to the video project
  • Export video file from video editing software with the following audio settings: 44.1kHz/Stereo/16b/MPEG-4/192 (Pinnacle 19 can only export with audio codec MPEG-4)

  • Open video file in HandBrake software and encode with AAC codec and Bitrate 192

And it’s a wrap! This worked for me. Might be any number of other possibilities to achieve the same result. If you know better one, please leave a comment.

Programs used: Cubase Artist 8.5, Pinnacle Studio 19, HandBrake
